5 Mistakes Beginners Make When Running Facebook Ads

If you've tried Facebook ads before and felt like you just "threw money away," you're not alone. Almost every beginner makes the same mistakes when they start — the good news is, once you know them, they're very easy to fix.

Let's go through the 5 most common ones.

Mistake 1: Targeting Everybody Instead of the Right Audience

A lot of beginners think "the more people that see my ad, the better." So they target everyone — all ages, all locations, no specific interest. This feels safe, but it's actually the fastest way to waste your budget.

If you're selling skincare for women, your ad showing up to men who have zero interest in skincare is money down the drain. Take time to define who you're really talking to — age range, gender, location, and interests — before you spend a single naira.

Mistake 2: Running an Ad With No Clear Offer

Many beginners just post a product photo with the price and expect people to buy. But people need a reason to act now, not later. Compare these two:

  • "Bag for sale — ₦8,000"
  • "Durable everyday bag — ₦8,000 this week only, free delivery on 2+ orders"

The second one gives people a reason to buy today instead of scrolling past and forgetting. Always give your ad a clear offer, deadline, or benefit — not just a product and a price.

Mistake 3: Boosting a Post Instead of Using Ads Manager

The blue "Boost Post" button is easy and tempting — but it's also the least effective way to advertise. Boosting gives you very limited targeting and tracking options compared to Facebook Ads Manager.

Ads Manager (found in Meta Business Suite) lets you:

  • Target specific audiences properly
  • Test different images/videos against each other
  • Track exactly how many people bought vs just clicked
  • Retarget people who already showed interest

It looks more complicated at first, but a few YouTube tutorials will get you comfortable with it — and it saves you far more money in the long run than boosting ever will.

Mistake 4: No Clear Call-to-Action

Beginners often assume people will "just know" what to do after seeing the ad. But you must tell them directly:

  • "Click below to order"
  • "Send us a DM to grab yours"
  • "Tap 'Shop Now' to order via WhatsApp"

Without a clear instruction, even interested buyers hesitate or forget. Always end your ad copy with one simple, direct action.

Mistake 5: Giving Up After One Ad

This is probably the biggest mistake of all. Someone runs one ad, spends ₦5,000, doesn't see instant results, and concludes "Facebook ads don't work for me."

The truth is, most successful ads come after testing — different images, different captions, different audiences. What doesn't convert on the first try often works after a small tweak. Give yourself at least 3–5 small tests before deciding an approach isn't working.

Putting It All Together

Facebook ads can genuinely grow your business fast — but only when you avoid these common traps. Know your audience, give a clear offer, use Ads Manager properly, guide people with a clear call-to-action, and be patient enough to test and improve.
